FTL Communication |

In the Robotech TV series, where do we see signs of FTL communications?

We4ll, considering SDF-1 never made any calls back to Earth during their return trip from Pluto, It's safe to guess that they had yet to develop such a
system. By SC they might have something considering Liberty Base was supposed to communicate with SDF-3/The Pioneer mission, and Carpenter's vessel
received their distress call, so it's possible that some form of basic FTL comms were available by then.

I beleive the fleets Zentraedi fleets sent to earth several light years from Dolza's fleet (enough for several days in Spacefold transit). The fleets were
communicating somehow.

I worded that poorly, I really mean real-time FTL type communication.

I think there's a face to face communication in "Battle Hymn". Also in "Robotech Masters" Exedore says they spotted the factory
satellite *yesterday* which might suggest real time or close to real time communications. Although IIRC most Zentraedi communication is by couriers.
In "Invid Invasion" I believe Scott's fleet receives the go for assaulting Earth in real time from Admiral Hunter's flagship. Also Scott trying to reply to Gabby's son seems to imply real time communications. However the flagship(s) could have been in Earth's system for both of those instances.

The Shadow Chronicles - Discussion between Hunter and Reinhardt and Grant gives us Real Time FTL Comm, of course that's not in the series itself.
Did the Robotech Masters ever get seen communicating among themselves? |

In TRM there is, but it appears to be between in-system forces.

Hmm, the Invid Queen calsl to her children across the cosmos, but we have no way of knowing how long it took to get the message . . .

The Invid, yeah, they probably have something but then again, they are magical. =)

RTsurfer is right about the real time communication between Breetai and Dolza in Battlhymn (I'm watchign it now). So the Zentraedi definitely have
the technology and then I would assume that so do the Masters.
Do we have any examples of humans doing it before TSC's version of Reflex Point? |

Good catch. I wonder where Dolza's fleet was parked at the time.

Well there is no evidence to indicate if they'd moved from their position 10 days fold from Earth

What does this mean? Did they state they were 10 days away?I think Jeffar is refering to the elapsed time outside of the Fold Bubble. Doesn't Lisa comment about the trip taking 1 day in Fold Space, but beining actually longer? The Masters do communicate with the Elders in Ep.37, and one does get the impression the Elders where not close by as the location is mentioned. If they where part of the fleet they would already know the location. FTL communications are implied though Liberty for humans, but the focus on the story does not seem to use it much. |

From "First Contact",
Lisa: Wow, it's been almost 10 Earth days since we began this fold operation. I'll bet a lot has happened in Macross City. It seems to be implied that the Masters entered our system as two or more fleets. IIRC, the forward forces reporting back to the Masters in the early episodes, then the main fleet advancing toward Earth, and later the Masters over Earth reporting to the Elders further back in the system with all forces eventually converging near Earth for the final battles. Those of us who supported this view considered the face to face talks of the Elders and Masters (on the flying mushrooms in the big void) to be holographic in nature.

That's the 10 days fold I was referring to.

Actually if you remember, in the episode were Kyron blew out the radar on the SDF-1, it's mentioned that communications with earth had be jammed by the
Zentraedi. Based on that remark by the bridge crew, I'd say it's safe to say the SDF-1 did have FTL com's.
"Well that is the battle fortress, but what have they done to it?"

In "Volunteers" when they are planning to reestablish contact with Liberty Dana thinks, "Sure it's important to have our
hyper-communications equipment functional as soon as possible but I had no idea General Emerson would be giving the briefing on the mission..." I would
interpret this as meaning Earth is ftl communication capable though it doesn't make clear whether they are in real time or not.
I think it was AlphaVT whom suggested the reason we don't see more hyper/ftl communication in Robotech is that perhaps it takes a lot of power, a big transmitter, and/or favorable stellar conditions for it to happen. That Earth had become reliant on hyperspace relays (like Liberty) to ensure they had regular and reliable communications between Earth and its fleets.

Brian3D wrote: Naw, not really. We have the ability to communicate with probes and the like in the far reaches of the solar system. There is just a little lag time. If they had real-time communications with Earth, at that distance, then perhaps we could say with certainty.

rtsurfer wrote: Yeah, one could suppose that the real-time FTL communication has a limited range, requiring "stations" every so often to rely the message. It would be an interesting way to fight, if communications were much faster than the fold speeds of vessels.
