Though the fact that perception of time passing is thrown off during fold according to the scene in Robotech's Macross Saga may indicate some kind of psychological effect. Not sure if that is in the Macross version fo the scene though.

When they do so in Frontier, it is very reluctantly and they abandon several of the pods to do so. "We can't rely on some ghostly space fleet to show up and save us.
