I could write about myself and my websites, but that really wouldn't be objective, now would it?

Wait.
Someone actually wants to keep track of the Robotech Fan Community's history? What kind of person would subject themselves to that kind of torture? Robotech fans often-times make Transformers fans look sane! ^_^ I wonder, though: would it be easier to put together two separate fan histories? Pre- and Post- Robotech.com? That's how I tend to remember things. ~Pap.

Why doesnt everyone work on it together here in this thread?
Maybe start by outlining the various stages of fandom such as 1980's - Robotech on the air 1. Fans of the show -Kids -Teenagers -College age 2. Early Internet/BBS 3. Fans of: -Comic books -Novels -RPG -Animation Canon -OSM 4. Failed projects -Movie -Sentinels 1990's - The dry years 1. Protoculture Addicts 2. Internet/BBS -Timeline controversies -RRG 3. Robotech.com 4. Ebay 5. OSM -Macross II -Macross Plus -Macross 7 6. Failed projects -Robotech 3000 2000's - Robotech in the post Robotech.com era 1. Robotech.com 2. Ebay 3. Toynami 4. OSM -Yamato -Macross O -Macross Frontier 5. Shadow Chronicles This is just a suggestion of how the outline would be, there are others out there more knowledgable about the specific events, so add your own categories and sub categories I mean we have all the resources here to paint a complete picture, where else does? |

Tweaking the outline, some
1980's - Robotech on the air 1. Fans of the show -Kids -Teenagers -College age -original Robotech Fan Club 2. Fans of: -Comic books -Novels -RPG -Animation Canon -OSM 3. Failed projects -Movie -Sentinels 4. Protoculture Addicts This started around 1988, and was actually near the end of its Robotech fan run in 1990-1991 1990's - The dry years 1. Early Internet/BBS/other -The Robotech Echo on Fidonet -The gatech Robotech ML under Dave Dietrich -Attempt to start up a new Robotech Fan Club as a APA/snail-mail group (Mike Choi, Basara, and others were in this group) - I think I still have some of the stuff in a drawer somewhere. 3. the WWW era internet - the explosion of net fanfics - Macross Mecha Files for the RPG, by Dave Dietrich -alt.fan.fobotech newsgroup - the Ratinox/Walker robotech ML, and mismanagement of... =RTF Fanfic database(by the RRG) / debate over where official material and dialogue trumps OSM descriptions of mecha, and rampant abuse of "Oh, this site is canon" by its members. =Timeline controversies / Early return (based on the TV show & all official statements and licensed material before 2000) vs. Late Return (primarily based on the fanfics of the RTF and 1 line of narrator dialogue contradicted by multiple characters' lines in the series) =mass bannings from the RML to stifle free discussion that countered the RTF leads to the Robotech Cantina ML & the Disciples of Zor web page -The Robotech Cantina ML -The Disciples of Zor =message boards, weekly java chats & weekly email list =issues with software and with hackers =attempts to become official Robotech fan group stifled by the RTF/RRG group's connections to HG through Tom Bateman, leads to robotech.com =The Robotech Page comes into being after one too many failures of the DoZ board to host a message board. =The RDF-HQ (originally a splinter site for CavScout's creations) takes over forums from the Robotech Page after too many hacks of the RPMB, goes through a couple incarnations before landing on ezBoard (now Yuku). 4. Robotech.com Beta (1999-2000) -Deliberate misrepresentations of the intent of HG by its employees -RP/RRG hired to "consult", sucked for ideas, then cast aside - with most of their advice ignored. -The "new series from Japan" poll given to some beta testers. Was it really referring to a project that wasn't going to be even DISCUSSED for a couple more years (importing Macross OSM) or a veiled attempt at gauging the market value of importing a heavily edited Macross 7 as the new Robotech, instead of Robotech 3000 (note that several concepts from Macross 7, that were not in Robotech, appear to have made it into The Shadow Chronicles, such as the pink-haired daughter of Max & Miriya) -Companies with legitimate uses of Macross licenses other than through HG attacked, prevented from selling their wares. 5. OSM -Macross II =Macross II RPG from Palladium -Macross Plus -Macross 7 6. Failed projects -Robotech 3000 -Robocon 99/00 2000's - Robotech in the Robotech.com era 1. Robotech.com opens as a fan community 2. Ebay 3. Toynami 4. OSM -Yamato Toys - originally going to be Toycom releases in the US, with Wal-mart sales even, at a price point 1/3 that of Toynami and much higher quality. One of the many US licenses shut down by HG's "legal" moves. -HG Claims ownership of ALL MACROSS in US Market, based on contract with Tatsunoko. Triggers Japanese lawsuits between Tatsunoko and Big West (the REAL owner of all Macross after the original series), resulting in the rights to the original series getting split, and HG having to make agreements with both over certain things. -Macross Zero -Macross Frontier 5. Shadow Chronicles =developmental process =what actually ended up in the finished product Anyone want to add more? Stan Bundy sbundy@kih.net ICQ: Basara (2878324) Xfire: basara549

tl; dr. Robotech fandom or what passes for it is indicative of the grow of Intarweb, the burnout of old farts which generally results in READ THE FAQ NOOB, the old farts finally getting semi steady gigs and finding out that paying for serve space sucks, and Steve and Tommy breaking out the ban hammer since the foundation of rt.com. If we're talking about Robotech sequels it's the classic case of HG of consistently setting low standards and failing to achieve. Christ on a fucking crutch, those assholes couldn't get laid in an Amsterdam whorehouse with a key of Bolivian marching powder under each arm and their pockets stuffed to the walls with Benjamins (well these days 100 Euro notes). HG cannot market Robotech effectively which is why as a company it stagnated throughout the years. Currently it's hoping that a Hollyweird movie deal might save the company but there's no way if a movie will be made or if said movie will be a hit. Again HG hasn't done much w/ RT except failboat. Are you trying to outline the actual fandom or how Robotech has developed, through the eyes of the fandom?

Here is the entry for Star Wars:
http://www.fanhistory.com/wiki/Star_Wars It mostly looks at the history of Star Wars fan fiction, but I think we can come up with a more comprehensive entry that includes not only fan fiction, but all major fan endeavors such as fan fic, fan art, collecting, RPG stats, continuity/timelines, interviews, etc. |
