Here's my suggestion, let's make a thread with the facts and only the facts we find about he RT live action movie project. Opinions are everyone's right, but they can clutter things up when someoene wants to find news new & old. Any objections?

Here's what we have so far (thanks to Maverick for finding this)

So far every other article looks as if its a re-write of the Hollywood Reporter article

-Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the rights

- (Tobey) Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role

-Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Prods.

-Craig Zahler ("The Brigands of Rattleborge") has been tapped to write the screenplay.

-Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce.

Jason Netter will serve in a producer capacity.

Matthew Reilly (Warner Production Exec) brought the project to Warners and is overseeing. Daniel Shafer brought the project to Maguire and will shepherd for the company.

And I guess there's some relavant info from an older article I wrote over a year ago on my blog:

Originally Jason Netter posted this on his page saying Chuck Russell was attached. Tommy's later explanation to me on the SSL talk show was that this was due to an employee for Jason Netter who jumped the gun. Tommy did not go into any further details of just how far this deal had gone at the time.

And I mention in the article who Alan Letz kind of teased the crowd at AX 2004 by asking if they'd like to see a live action movie, then asking if they'd like to see a live action movie set in the Southern Cross era.

I'm listening to the Space Station Liberty show right now with Kevin McKeever. Here are some things I picked up when the show wasn't cutting out.

-Harmony Gold has been getting unsolicited pitches for live action movies rights for years (since at least 2004)

-They're only early in the process right now, the only thing that's happened right now is that WB has acquired the rights. The movie has not been greenlit and has not begun production. The first draft of the script has yet to be written.

-Harmony Gold will retain some creative control over the script, however Kevin was not at liberty to say just how much.

-The production of the live-action movie will not affect the production of Shadow Rising and vice versa.

That's all I can remember right now. I may listen later. Feel free to add to what's been said on this show.

If one were to take the Batman Begins / DC Animated Universe projects analogy to its core, this would imply that as of right now the live action movie is not intended to go with the current animated continuity and follow one of its own.

-One more thing I forgot to put in with Kevin's interview last week was that he said Frank Agrama wants this to be a mostly character driven story.

Here's the latest on the film from Tommy's interview with him and Kevin Siembadadadieadaia from Palladium on the SSL:

- the recent Palladium deal has not been included for the rights to make a game from live action, but was implied that it could later on.

- Tommy says the people at WB wants to respect the franchise's fandom and history

- Tommy also says Tobey and Craig Zahler, the screenwriter, have been previously familiar with Robotech

- Tommy's involvement in the film, while not specifically laid out yet, do involve him making a trip to the Warner Bros. lot. (stretching, I know).

imdb.com has listed the film as simply "Robotech" and as having a 2010 release date

Keep in mind that imdb entries are often fan submitted, although they are submitted by the production companies as well. The 2010 release year should not be seen as any confirmed official date, nor should the title be considered final.

More info is available for imdb pro members, most likely the info that's come before.

This is the first time its said that Maguire is considering the role of Rick Hunter, and if this blog's sources are true, then it would be the first confirmation that the movie will focus on the Macross saga. The first paragraph is directly from the Hollywood Reporter article, which also implies its aboutt the Macross Saga, but it tough to know if that description was provided by Warner Bros or something the author wrote up on their own.

EDIT: I just realized this article was written back in September, and no other source since has mentioned since then that Maguire is eyeing the lead of Rick Hunter. Take it for what you will.

Only update so far is this quote from an interview, which doesn't really say anything other than praise for Warner Bros. If anything, we learn Tommy can be evasive about answering direct questions (because, you know, that's the first time its ever happened).

TVO: Now for the live action movie it will be a little different because I imagine Harmony Gold doesn't have the funds to make a multi-million dollar movie live action Robotech movie, so they will have to have some say in it.

TY: There are very few studios out there that can do a film of that magnitude. And for that, I can't think of very many entities other than Warner Bros. to tackle a franchise of that magnitude that would make the fans happy. They've done Harry Potter, they've re-launched Batman . . . they've had a really good track record.

Somewhat of an update, Warlord1863 said this about the New York Comic Con Panel:

Tommy was asked a bunch of questions about the live-action movie but didn't give very much away.

One question inquired about how close to the original Robotech series will the live-action movie be?

Tommy responded that Robotech will go through a re-interperetation, like all movies based on comics or cartoons. He used the example of the X-Men changing costumes, because their original costume designs wouldn't fly. Things like that. But he assured everyone that they are striving to get the movie as close to the Robotech that we all know and love as possible.

Because it's so early in the process he couldn't really reveal much more.

So, its looking like a re-imagining at this point.

Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce as will Jason Netter.

Crevello and Maguire brought the project to Warners in September.

Matt Reilly and Matt Milam overseeing for Warners.

"Robotech" extends Kasdan's return to the fantasy genre that began last year when he was tapped to pen the "Clash of the Titans" remake for Warners and Thunder Road. Kasdan wrote the screenplays for "Return of the Jedi," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" before penning such works as "The Big Chill" and "Grand Canyon."

He is repped by CAA.

Sci-Fi just re-posted the latest Hollywood Reporter piece on their own website.

My gut feeling? The movie will loosely cover the first half of the Macross Saga storyline, and (if I were Kasdan) climax with Rick and Max dueling Breetai and Khyron on Breetai's flagship.

And I had a dream long long ago that the redesigned Veritech Fighters would be available as toys...some in a tasteful chrome scheme (Gold for Roy Fokker, Red for Rick, Blue for Max and Green for Ben Dixon).

I'd like to see the first movie end with SDF-1 making it back to Earth. There's a lot of ground to cover in just that portion alone.

What really matters to me is how much style they put into this thing. They'd better make sure to keep the original theme score, or I'll scream. I've always wanted to hear the Robotech theme score in a big cinematic movie. That would just rock.

I'd particularly love it if they make a trailer that features that last scene of the Robotech intro, with the battloid whirling around and then locking into its stance. That's just so trademark, and it would be awesome to see.

Lawrence Kasdan wrote a previous draft. Warners is intent on keeping the project moving forward, and Gough and Millar bring action and geek cred to the table. The WMA-repped duo worked on "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" and "Spider-Man 2," among other films, and were showrunners on TV's "Smallville" for many years.

Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold is executive producing "Robotech," as is Jason Netter.

If that synopsis is correct, then its looking more and more like a Macross adaptation.

EDIT: I just realized that the synopsis, yet again, was a re-hash of the same one that The Hollywood Reporter gave over a year ago in the initial aritle, with the exception of the "two young pilots" part.

Chuck Roven is no longer working on the feature film adaptation of Robotech although he wishes the remaining producers well.

Jeff Otto represented IESB and talked to Roven exclusively in Beverly Hills today and asked about the status of the project.
His comments are below:

IESB: What's the current progress on the Robotech script and where is that project at right now?

Chuck Roven: You know, that's not really a project that I'm involved with any more, so you need to talk to Akiva Goldsmith or Tobey Maguire about that project.

IESB: Is it possible you will get involved with that project again?

CR: You know, I just really couldn't tell you. Those are great guys and I wish them fantastic luck with it and it's really a great project.

Robotech is currently set up of over at Warner Bros. with Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Lawrence Kasdan attached to write.

Based on the sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. Tobey Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans on being a tentpole sci-fi franchise.

What's this mean? Who the hell knows.
