So you hated TSC, what would YOU have done? |

Lately ther's been a lot of complaints of The Shadow Chronicles. Everything from artwork to CGI to story to character choice. Everybody has an opinion, and the majority seems to be that TSC was the wring step to take. And so I'm curious. What would YOU have done with robotech? Where would YOU have continued the story? This is your chance to be Tommy Yune, this is your chance to be Jack McKinney. The invid have left earth, the SDF-3 has yet to defold. What happened?

First of all, I wouldn't have changed the ending of the original series. TSC is completely incompatible with episode 85, even ignoring the blatantly wrong time setting.
I would have tried to stay true to the basic premise that had been given for 20 years as to what a post-Invid sequel would have been - a search for answers and for Hunter - not something hastily resolved in a single movie. Even if I had gone for the premises behind TSC, I would have taken 13 episodes minimum to do so, to make it marketable. The Ideal sequel for Robotech would have been 26-65 episodes long, involve several episodes (probably a week or two at a 5-day schedule, or 2-3 months at 1/week schedule), just picking up the pieces on Earth & the local colonies. Things like the trial of Reinhardt (they can deny it all they want, but the man was acting like Ahab or Queeg in space in the original series - there still is no proof from the original series that his use of the Neutron-S missiles in any way reflected how the real command structure would have used them - hell, he ordered them used AFTER HUMANITY HAD EFFECTIVELY WON! - My God, do you seriously think that Sparks would have to be taken aside and quietly told what was going to be done, if Reinhardt actually had orders to do what he did, from Hunter? It doesn't work like that, even in fantasy military operations). Actually putting together a real mission for looking for the SDF-3. Resolving the fates of various characters, especially the ASC ones, and those elsewhere that aren't on the SDF-3. More long-term introduction of the new characters. No silly "major guest star" appearances for headliner names, when in reality the character dies in 15 minutes. I'm sorry - the use of Mark Hamill's name to market TSC was as unethical as the high-billing of Steven Seagal for "Executive Decision" - if not more so, because of the differences in the markets for the two products, and the relevance of their characters. An actual long term search mission - the whole "strange new worlds" pattern, ranging from lost Tyrolean colonies, to abandoned Invid worlds, to the races from Sentinels. Whether the SDF-3 is ever found, and whether Hunter is hero, villain or something in between, might be up in the air even as late as the last week of the series. The Haydonites might still be the villains, but not obviously at first. And, like TEotC, they'd end up being in that role from being the pawns of their creator, and have a chance for some, at least, to throw off those shackles. The real villain would probably be Haydon himself, and would shed light on the real mysteries of Robotech - like how three interbreeding-capable human species are present (counting the Zentraedi as part of the Tyrolean branch). He might not even be the greatest villian - there might have been an even greater threat, that he was manipulating the lesser races to have to confront, as coldly and as amoral as the bloodshed may have been the result. If I HAD to have a movie to try to drum up interest in a new series, it would be the equivalent of the first 5 episodes of the new series, and cover the rise from chaos between the Invid departure, and Scott's liftoff during the concert. ********** But, of course, the real thing I would have avoided was a. announcing and hyping a "new" series that was really going to be an adaptation of an existing series (without getting permission from its owners first), fielding a series of poll questions on the Beta of the official web page that were only interpretable as being in reference to another series conversion, NOT a new series written from scratch. b. then "fixing" the timeline to fit this series, as it opens every episode for the first half of the series showing the current year as 2045 (throwing out 15 years of continuity and marketing), c. then having to scramble for 5 years to produce a less than mediocre short movie replacement for it after being told that they didn't have the rights to that series (and finding out that the fans would have lynched them had they gone with the original plan) d. then acting as if their original plan never existed, e. all the while claiming they have had the rights for lots of stuff ever since day one, when they were telling people just 8 years ago that they didn't even have options for those very same things. To paraphrase Adelai Stephenson, "When they stop lying, I'll stop telling the truth about them". One should always be wary of a scientist speaking out of his narrow field, or those invoking their name outside their fields. Scientists are human too, and are just as prone to cling to 'causes', just or frivolous, as the rest of our species. - Dr. Peter Wykoff Walker, 11 Sept 1997, rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated

Re: So you hated TSC, what would YOU have done? | ||

First off let's clarify Shadow Chronicles is doing really bad. They wanted to sell this as an anime and there isnt discussion about this in any important anime site. Anime fans definetely dont see this movie as an anime. They also failed to sell it to older fans, there isnt discussion about this in any important SW, ST, BSG, etc site. Now what's left? The Robotech fans. How's doing this among Robotech fans?
For what I see robotech.com is a pro Shadow Chronicles site, not a real option for detractors of the movie. Likely, most fans hanging there has a real or virtual friendship relation with the movie producers, makers as a result of the several conventions they make or who knows what other reasons, because when someone who doesnt like the movie arrives to point crappiness in the movie a bunch of fans there jump to protect them as if they were talking about their parents with very ridiculous arguments several times. I noticed that when higher is the rank you have there, less chances there are of you seeing that person critizing the movie. Coincidence? I dont think so. I dont know what they get with the rank, but that rank seems to work perfectly as the ranks in military, or position in religions, what the person with a higher rank says it's almost holy and for what I see the movie makers have the higher rank there. I noticed also the fan sites robotech.com promotes are pro Shadow Chronicles too, and they have selected the few reviews out there which speaks of the movie as a masterpiece, leaving out the large amount of them with treat it as a regular or bad movie. So again, how's doing among Robotech fans? For the reviews I see is creating a division in the fans. Take a look at IMDB for example, you have the Robotech series with a very good rating of 8.4 out of 146 votes. Then it comes the critized Sentinels, with a rating of 5.8 out of 120 votes. Then Robotech the Movie (and no one consider Robotech the movie as part of Robotech anymore) with 5.5 out of 111 votes. And finally, Shadow Chronicles with 5.0 out of 86 votes. So why logically speaking should me and my friends see Shadow Chronicles as something in the line of Robotech and not to see the Robotech movie as the same? In any case, there's a very clear difference between the series and the movie's cultural impact. The Robotech series was really a masterpiece, and this in our opinion is a mastercrap. Even if you try to enjoy it simply because it has some of the same mecha designs (and not caring about all the other aspects that make Robotech) you cant ignore that it isnt for sure in the same level than the series. Personally, we want the best for Robotech and this is thousand of miles away in coolness terms than the Robotech series. Now, going specifically to your question, I would have change that, * It isnt characteristic of the entire Robotech series, everything looks Mospeada. Even as bad writer as it was, the creator of Robotech (Carl Macek) made a movie that was characteristic of the entire series. I would have him as a story editor for the people who's making the movie and who's biased for a saga being unable to alter Robotech that way. * It had a bad writer. The writer they hired writes cartoons for children. You need a better writer. * The music feels nothing like Robotech. Either they make new music that feels like Robotech or they use the old one. * The characters have no life. They seem like cardboard cutouts. Get someone who can make good characters. * There are no new mecha. I like to see the old mechas but also new ones. * All the women have big breast. If they want to make a movie for masturbatory children fine, but I'm not one of them. * The old character looks nothing like they were. Rick Hunter's design looks awful, the Sentinels one was even better. Marlene feels nothing like the old Marlene, new design, new voice actress, new personality. Same for Louie, new design, new voice actor, new personality. * If they intended this to be a Science Fiction and not a Science Fantasy movie they failed. What's that about the neutron s missiles creating a black hole? If there is enough matter in the neutron s missiles as for a creating a black hole which drags the SDF-3 into it, any vessel which has those missiles onboard should have been destroyed apart for the gravitational field the mass created. It doesnt matter if the matter is packed in the size of a giant missile or in a spot, the gravitational force near it should be the same. Get a sci fi writer if you want to make a sci fi movie. The series felt like Sci Fi. This feels like Science Fantasy also with Marlene moving herself from here to there magically. * They changed meanings of the original series. The Regis ran away because someone else was coming? Yeah right, that wasnt why she left in the series. They rewrote several things too. They are pointed out in Wikipedia. Some of them can be explained in the context of the movie, even so it wasnt what really was meant to be in the series. * The 3d was crappy. I have a friend who is an architect that for fun makes 3d and he's capable of making better 3d than the one you see in vessels and veritechs. Get better 3d artists. That's almost all, I think. Basically, if you want a better Robotech you need a new team. Perhaps they could sell a license to different people for them to make a better movie. You just can keep the voice actors. |

If it were up to me huh...
The first thing is to not use the Sentinels at all. As virtually all the information regarding the Sentinels has, at the very least, ties to the novels version of events, and considering I'm operating from material that supposedly does not consider the novels appropriate, the Sentinels doesn't have a place in the new world order. Instead, my nods to the novels probably would have been a lot more subtle. Secondly, I wouldn't have used a re-envisioning of the End of the Circle as the basis of the storyline. That story has already been told, it doesn't need to be animated. Next up, I would have gotten some new mecha designs to replace the Shadow Fighters rather than going with super shadow fighters. It'd be a good way to sell some new toys, because I don't buy freaking recolors (and I can't be the only one like that). Lastly, I would have farmed the animation out to someone with a sterling reputation for good animation, like Gonzo for instance, that way even if I did go for the mix of classic and CGI animation, I know it would be well done. Plus, I can also feel confident that the character designs would be different from character to character for more than just slight differences in the facial features. I swear I almost got Janice and Ariel confused a couple times. Now I don't care if the character looks like a sex-bomb or not, because these days I'm finding myself remembering characters more for their personality than looks (I guess that's why I read more these days than watch anything). Now here's what I would have done story-wise: I would have made a three-part series in homage to the original Robotech line, though the three parts would not necessarily be generational and would likely be more closely interwoven with each other. The first part would have focus on the fallout from using the Neutron-S missiles and the search for the SDF-3. The people of the Earth might not so readily accept the REF as the saviors of the Earth once they learn about the Neutron-S missiles, I know I would be furious over the issue. So I can easily see Reinhardt being taken to court of the issue, and, if he actually gave the order, Hunter as well. The trial of Hunter (which would take place without him present), being a hero of the 1st war, would probably be very polarizing. This could lead to a civil war (or at least the spark that sets off other tensions), and a race to find Hunter, some wanting to kill him, others arrest and yet others to prove his innocence. This arc would likely see the most of the older designs (not necessarily ones the viewer has seen, maybe transitional designs between the generations). Possibly more development of shadow technology and a hint of its treacherous nature. Probably the shortest part. The second part would be the aliens, not the Haydonites, who gave shadow tech to the REF comes back, probably for similar reasons as the Haydonites, or to punish the REF for not living up to its end of the deal: to eradicate the Invid. The exact nature of shadow tech is revealed and is summarily dumped by the Earth Forces in favor of some new designs using classic Robotechnology. Of course, as it turns out the above aliens weren't malicious at all, just using war as an excuse to develop humanity into the fighting machine they need to be to survive what is probably a very hostile universe. The third part would consist of a wrap-up and a detailed look into the nature of Protoculture. This is very similar to Basara's idea (actually, they are the same basic idea), but I had some of my own details to throw in. |

I'd make a completely new story not called Robotech. If they wouldn't let me do that, I'd make a new version of Robotech not in the same universe as the original series. If they wouldn't let me do that, it would be one movie about finding Rick Hunter that ends Robotech forever.

I would have made it take place 20 years after the New Gen, make it about Earth, with a new generation of characters that a new audience could relate to. While sprinkling in a few characters and nostalgic elemetns from the past series here and there. The last thing I would have done was overlap it with the old show.

Links don't exist anymore for most of it. The rest is just stuff I've seen or heard from persons directly involved.
There was a series of poll questions I was asked when I joined the robotech.com beta, that as a group could only be construed one way. I have had people try to convince me that the questions were in reference to Animeigo's Macross subs, but since I personally KNOW the people who did the translation work (one of them was the chair of a convention I was a Dept. head at, at the time, the other one of our guests), I also know that the timing was wrong, and that the Animeigo project was well past that stage in the time period of the robotech.com beta. No, the questions could ONLY be interpreted as asking for opinions on an importation of Macross 7 as a translated, partially rewritten, series by HG. It is interesting to note that in about the same time period, HG blocked Toycom from bringing in the Macross Plus Variable fighters, and blocked Bandai's planned US release of the VF-X 2 game - both of which should only have been an issue if HG had something planned for a series that shows them. The early character sketches for Alex from around the time that a new sequel (immediately after the killing of the R3000 project) look NOTHING like the final character from TSC - they DO look a LOT like Gamlin Kizaki. The early-mid 2040s has been repeatedly shown to not work with the original 85 episodes, if you discount Sentinels. It DOES, however, line you up pretty well with the 2045 start of Macross 7 (a date shown in many, if not most, M7 episode intros). And, the original hints at what TSC's villains were to be like sounded nothing like the haydonites - they sounded a hell of a lot like the protodevlin, though. All through the 90s, all the Robotech licensees I talked to at panels and privately, repeatedly stated that they had seen the HG license for Macross, and that it specifically excluded DYRL or any other sequels/spinoffs. One wasn't supposed to use DYRL VF-1s, uniforms, etc. (though Palladium had originally done so by accident with some of their art that was taken from designer sources, as it wasn't labeled in English as to the source). It was only with the comics move to Antarctic Press that the comics started to break this, and a much-hated Eternity/Academy Robotech comic writer suspected (much as I did) that their doing so played a role in AP's abrupt loss of that license - yet the same manner of usage of other Macross properties continued with the later publishers. At about that time, certain HG persons came down with a "new gospel" the HG had ALWAYS had such rights, and rights to all Macross, from any source, in the states. Note that at least 3 other companies were selling non-Robotech Macross sequels/retellings on video at that time, from contracts with the Japanese. A year or two after that (And still does, last I checked), the story kept changing from "always" to " our current contracts" and back over and over, depending on who you talk to. After finally seeing what TSC turned out like, I'm pretty much of the opinion that anything stated by HG should be taken with a grain of salt - their stories waffle back and forth worse than a politician's position - and they the power to edit the records of their own statements and aren't afraid to abuse it.

It is an enjoyable movie (providing you're not dissecting it to compare to the original series, or decided you weren't going to like before even seeing it) despite its flaws. Is it memorable? No, not exactly and that is one of the biggest flaws of movie. The series was memorable, the movie not so much.

To me, the worst part, was that the movie took so long to get going and then just as it seemed to started to move the plot... bam!.... movie over. Plus, I really do think the mecha animation were really poor. But your right it's hard to take those, who promclaimed it a bad movie prior to seeing it, seriously after they've now seen it and proclaim the same thing. I've said it before, it was an OK anime movie. Nothing great but nothing I am pissed I spent 20 bucks on either. I am with you, the biggest disapointment is that it wasn't up to par with the series. --------

Changes I would have done:
Drop the rehash of the RP Battle. Drop the Star Trek/Gate Feel: Avoid the techno-babble solutions. No Ariel and her teleports. No we get rid of one bad guy, now we get to deal with someone bigger almost right away. Have Grant leave after the battle to find the SDF-3. They would know where to start looking and actually find it or its remains. They could bump into the "new badguys", and leave it as an advanced scout of the main group which would be several years off atleast. This way you avoid rectons. The question of the SDF-3 gets resolved (instead of pushed off). And you open up the potential for a future enemy for the next generation to deal with like has occured previously. This way when the next chapter of RT starts you have all new designs again for the new generation. |

Since I didn't hate "Shadow Chronicles," I'm not sure I'm supposed to reply. Does mildly indifferent to somewhat amused by the film count? ^_^
Quote: Of all the things in "Shadow Chronicles" that I'd change, this is probably the biggest one. I honestly do not understand fans obsession with the SDF-03. Why is it not enough to assume the ship lost in space? It's a big universe, and the REF was using relatively untested technology (from a human standpoint). The SDF-03 folds and doesn't refold. Where is the mystery? I would've dropped the SDF-03 subplot entirely. The ship remains lost. Maybe the Ark Angel encounters it, maybe it doesn't. Maybe they encounter the hulled wreckage; maybe Rick and Lisa ran out of gas. It doesn't matter. This is something that should have waited until a much later point in the story (Part II or III, episode 50 out of 60, something like that). Given the way "Robotech" works, there's no real need to revisit the SDF-03. Beyond that, I would have worked hard to eliminate all traces of it being a "compilation movie" of the first three episodes in a much longer series. "Shadow Chronicles" fails because of that; so much of what was wrong plot-wise could have been fixed had a little more tightening been done to the final script. Give some characterization to the new characters, introduce the enemies, tighten up the plot - these would have helped tremendously. As it stands, it's too much like "The Sentinels" - i.e., unfinished. Oh, and pollinators. Robotech needs more pollinators. ~Pap. "The flowing river never stops and yet the water never stays the same.

Hm lets see.. something good... Starting from the story( derived of cliches,) without rewriting the continuity,,, - Make it be ANIME... not Americanised Crap.. - Hire a proffesional to write a script - Hire a proffesional to compose the music...(DOOH) - Hire a MECHA DESIGNER.... In mecha anime you need mecha..... - Hire a proffesional to ANIMATE.... - Hire someone who KNOWS HOW to make toys with good proportioned limbs.... -ADVERTISE..... Do not walk around southern california pretending you have a franchise.... only hand full of people knows of..... -Learn from JAPAN... They know how to do it. LEARN FROM THEM.... Those are the ROOTs of the legacy that has been handed to you..... -Watch more Gundam Seed, Fafner, Code geass, Scry-ed.... Learn what is modern mecha anime...(it is 2007.....)... -Keep mecha anime being MECHA ANIME.......... - Dont threat your fandom like they are a bunch of idiots with IQ 2....... -------------------------------------------------------- What would i do with the franchise......? -Remaster the original series in acordance with todays standards... Fix animation flaws.... -Edit the series into compilation movies....( with combined old new footage.... Aka sunrise did it with ZETA gundam...) - Make animation shorts......( something like Gundam Evolve... or Star wars shorts...) - Make prequels... - Make alternate views of the same wars......(other character perspective...) - Make alternate universe series.... - Make GAMES..( for PC, for ps3,xbox36....) - Make Comics - DECENT TOYS( other then ALPHA , BETA, Cyclone....all over again)... Ships, Invid mecha, Bioroids, hovertanks.............t The list goes on and on and on....You want more? |

Quote: Yeah: what gives? Beyond the initial "Battlecry" adds in ToyFare, I don't recall ever seeing any adds for new Robotech product. Marvel releases their animated movies and those are hawked all over the place (saw an add for "Avengers 2" on HGTV - I kid you not!). "Shadow Chronicles" comes out and there's what? Quote: There's a double-edged sword here. Robotech isn't a modern mecha anime; it's an anachronism. While Gundam Seed was pretty, I'm not sure Robotech could be treated in the same vein. Maybe something like "The 08th MS Team" would work better instead. I thought it did a fairly decent job of staying "true" to its source material, while presenting an updated (visually, at least) take on it. Quote: Yes! I've been saying that for years. Instead of focusing on putting together a "new" generation, HG should test the waters some: put out compartmentalized OAVs from each Robotech War, that way they don't have to introduce "new" elements so quickly and can gauge fan reaction. There were other squadrons on the SDF-01 besides Skull - what were they doing during the First RT War? What about the Destroids? Why not utilize one of the OTHER Armies from the Southern Cross? What about a "tales from the REF" style series? ~Pap. "The flowing river never stops and yet the water never stays the same.
